That unusual, rectangular iceberg looks a lot less rectangular from space

NASA’s sea ice survey captures bizarre perfectly rectangular iceberg The peculiar iceberg

"It probably wouldn't flip over", she said, but it could still crack and break up.

Operation IceBridge is NASA's longest-running aerial survey of polar ice.

In this case, an uncannily square-shaped iceberg broke away from Larsen C, the same ice shelf that produced the huge A-68 iceberg back in July 2017.

During the survey, created to assess changes in the ice height of several glaciers draining into the Larsen A, B and C embayments, IceBridge scientist Jeremy Harbeck spotted a very sharp-angled, tabular iceberg floating among sea ice just off of the Larsen C ice shelf.

The main berg, dubbed the A68 Iceberg, collided with the Bawden Ice Rise near the edge of the Larsen C Ice Shelf in May this year, causing numerous fractures.

Scientists have repeatedly warned that the world's sea ice is in danger of completely disappearing as the effects of climate change continue to be felt. The iceberg sits like a giant floating sheet cake near the east coast of the Antarctic peninsula. "I've seen many icebergs around Antarctica that have very straight, very long sides", he said.

WTF?! NASA has released an image showing an iceberg in Antarctica that appears so rectangular and flat, it looks purposely cut into shape. They split from the edges of ice shelves - large blocks of ice, connected to land but floating in the water surrounding iced-over places like Antarctica.

As with all icebergs, the part visible above the surface is just the top 10 percent of its mass.

But, he added that "the presence of icebergs like these are a sign of increased calving".

"You can think of the shelf like a bank account", she says.

An iceberg recently spotted by NASA scientists looks like it was carefully cut into a ideal rectangle, and it's getting a lot of attention because of those unexpected angles and straight lines.
