Five kids in Maryland may have a polio-like disease, as CDC investigates

US health officials on Tuesday reported a jump in cases of a rare paralyzing illness in children, and said it seems to be following an every-other-year pattern. Since 2014, 386 cases have been confirmed, the CDC said on Tuesday.
"The data on the recently reported cluster of cases of AFM will have to be carefully evaluated to better understand the role of EV-D68 in this new outbreak".
On Monday, CNN reached out to health departments in every state and received responses from 48 states plus the District of Columbia.
Health officials Arkansas and Oklahoma say a rare illness that's being compared to polio may have reached the states as it spreads across the U.S.
The condition is not new, but the CDC said it saw an increase in cases beginning in 2014.
While the symptoms of this virus has been described as polio-like, it is not polio, which has been eradicated in most of the world. It is important that tests are done as soon as possible after someone develops symptoms. That's when doctors feel it may be a case of AFM and treatment begins.
"Nobody really knows treatment protocols, they don't know prognosis, and they can't really give parents an answer as to where this is coming from", she said.
However, the CDC says they know that some patients diagnosed with AFM have recovered quickly, and some continue to have paralysis and require ongoing care.
Massachusetts General Neurology Department Director Dr. Marcelo Matiello urged parents who see any of these symptoms to get their children to a neurologist without hesitation. "The majority of kids have persistent weakness".
But both Glatter and Ehresmann were quick to reiterate that AFM is very rare. "We don't need to panic on this".
Unfortunately health officials do not know the cause of AFM or the long-term effects.
The CDC says that there has been an increase in cases of AFM since 2014. That appears to indicate an every-other-year pattern. The highest number of cases took place in 2016, when 149 were reported cases in 39 states. But Messonnier cautioned that it would be "premature" to be confident that this year will be the same as the earlier years. The CDC is not ruling out any possible triggers-from infections to toxins, autoimmune reactions to bug bites. In 2015, the CDC identified 22 patients who exhibited symptoms of AFM. "None of the specimens have tested positive for poliovirus". She said West Nile virus has not been linked to any of these cases, either. Though AFM has not claimed any lives this year, there was one death in 2017.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed an additional 56 cases across 22 states on Wednesday, and are investigating a further 65. In particular, the condition can cause weakness in the arms and legs along with loss of muscle tone and problems with reflexes.
