Flu season is here, and the report of a child's death in Tampa has more people thinking about getting their annual vaccine.

Vaccinations have been shown to reduce a child's likelihood of dying from the flu by 60 percent, health department officials said. The child did not receive a flu shot but was healthy before contracting the virus.

An innovative global study coordinated by Abt Associates has found that over the course of six flu seasons, getting a flu shot reduced a pregnant woman's risk of being hospitalized from flu by an average of 40 percent.

It's that time of year, the weather is getting colder and the flu season is starting to kick in.

"So past year there was a lot of concern that the virus's in the flu vaccine were not lining up with what we were seeing circulating in the southern hemisphere", says Beeler. During the last flu season, which was one of the worst to hit the U.S.in decades, 183 children died from the flu. Lomax says it's too early to tell if this flu season will be as bad as previous year.

Pregnant women can get their vaccines administered anytime during their pregnancies. The vaccine is widely available at doctor's offices and pharmacies and it take a couple of weeks to build immunity to the flu and the flu season has started.

"With any medication or vaccine, people are going to have concerns", said Dr. Jean Moorjani, a board-certified pediatrician at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, in a news release.

But Narula said that this first death of the child in Florida is the "wake-up call" that parents need to hear.

"A flu vaccine given during pregnancy helps protect the baby from flu infection for several months after birth, before he or she is old enough to be vaccinated themselves", the CDC reported.

"We're happy to have as many options out there as we can get", said Brammer.

Symptoms include fever, body aches, fatigue, coughing, and sore throat.
