A Chinese city, Chengdu, has perfected plans to replace the city's streetlights with an "artificial moon" by 2020. The artificial moon is made from a reflective coating that can aim the sun's light back to Earth and cover a span of 6 miles to 50 miles.

People's Daily was quick to reassure those concerned about the fake moon's impact on nighttime wildlife. Officials on the ground can control the diameter of the light to ensure it focuses precisely on the city and nowhere else, according to the report.

Chengdu, the capital of the Sichuan province, has proposed a plan to launch an artificial moon, or illumination satellite, into space, Asia Times is reporting.

About concerns that the manmade moonlight will interrupt the normal day-night cycle of animals and plants, Wu said the light intensity and illumination time can be adjusted and the accuracy of illumination can be controlled within scores of meters.

With an ultra-bright full moon each and every night, the city would then be in for serious savings on their monthly electric bills, or at least that appears to be the rationale for the ambitious project.

But according to Kang Weimin, director of the Institute of Optics, School of Aerospace, Harbin Institute of Technology, the light will amount only to a 'dusk-like glow'.

This info all comes via Wu Chunfeng, the chairman of Chengdu Aerospace Science and Technology Microelectronics System Research Institute Co., who spoke last week at an innovation and entrepreneurship conference in Chengdu.

Wu reportedly said testing had begun on the satellite years ago and the technology had now evolved enough to allow for launch in 2020.
