ISS: Space rocket declares emergency after launch – astronauts parachute out | Daily Star

On Thursday night Australian time, a Soyuz-FG booster rocket with a crewed Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft on top experienced a serious malfunction about three minutes into the flight, forcing USA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin to make an emergency landing in the Kazakh steppe.
Two minutes after launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, an American astronaut and a Russian cosmonaut were forced to make an emergency landing after the Russian-made Soyuz rocket malfunctioned.
The Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft carrying the crew of astronaut Nick Hague of the United States and cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin of Russian Federation blasts off to the International Space Station (ISS) from the launchpad at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan October 11, 2018.
But the opposition newspaper Novaya Gazeta also said the astronauts survived thanks to the reliability of the Soviet-era rocket's rescue system, which returned them safely to Earth despite the launch failure. A cloud of sand billowed up as the capsule came down on the desert steppe. Both flights experienced an abort midflight, forcing the capsule to separate from the rocket. The crew was quickly recovered and is in good condition.
The Interfax news agency on Friday cited a source familiar with the Russian investigation as saying that an important valve had failed to open due to a faulty firing cartridge.
Photographs later released by Roscosmos after the rescue showed the two astronauts smiling and relaxing on sofas at a town near their landing site as they underwent medical tests. An investigation will be conducted into the cause of the incident.
Roscosmos pledged to fully share all relevant information with NASA, which pays up to $82 million per Soyuz seat to the space station.
MOSCOW-NASA's chief heard one reassuring sound over the radio link after the aborted launch of a Soyuz capsule with an American and a Russian aboard. Hague and Ovchinin were set to be just the second two-man crew to travel to the space station in recent years. "We are planning their flight for the spring of next year".
As a result, Russian Federation has launched a criminal investigation into the rocket failure.
In a series of photos, Mr Gerst captured the moment a Russian Soyuz rocket malfunctioned at the start of what should have been a routine six-hour flight to deliver two astronauts to the ISS.
NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine and the NASA team are monitoring the situation carefully. "Everybody is alive", Rogozin wrote. "The crew has been saved". That mission will now be postponed until early next year, space officials said.
However, in the meantime, this failure has a number of consequences for the agencies and the crew aboard the space station.
In August, the space station crew found a hole had been drilled in the Soyuz capsule that caused a brief loss of air pressure before being patched. Rogozin has said it could have been sabotage.
Roscosmos's online stream of the launch cut out shortly after lift-off.
The launch failure marks an unprecedented mishap for the Russian space program, which has been dogged by a string of other incidents.
