A minimum of 97 votes were needed by a country to get elected to the Council.

"Our successful bid to keep our seat in the Council is proof that many in the global community remain convinced the Philippines respects and protects human rights and have seen through the efforts of some to politicize and weaponize the issue", Cayetano said in a statement.

The US quit the council in June, saying it made a mockery of human rights.

The 193-member UN General Assembly held elections at the worldwide organisation for new members to the UN Human Rights Council. Bahrain, Fiji and the Philippines were other regional candidates.

Amid the allegations of human rights violations against India in Kashmir, the country on Friday has secured the seat of influential Human Rights Council with the highest number of votes.

For the first time since the council was created in 2006, each voting region agreed in advance on 18 candidates to be in the running for 18 seats - removing any competition. Those countries will join other countries with poor human rights records, such as Cuba, China, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, on the world's top human rights body. A total of 18 new members were elected by the absolute majority through a secret ballot, PTI reported.
