A tropical weather system rapidly strengthened Monday into Hurricane Michael Monday and is likely to keep growing stronger ahead of an expected strike on Florida's Panhandle by midweek, forecasters said.

Entire blocks of homes near the beach were washed away, leaving nothing but concrete slabs in the sand. People are slowly getting in touch with loved ones, and they're starting to figure out just how to get on the road to recovery.

The city of Apalachicola is also included in the area.

Florida officials said a man was killed when he was crushed by a tree in Gadsden County.

Al Hancock, 45, who works on a tour boat, survived in Panama City with his wife and dog.

"We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the loved ones and friends of those killed", Cooper said in a statement.

Schools and state offices in the area are to remain shut this week.

The Hurricane Center predicts that the hurricane's peak winds will reach 125 miles per hour at landfall, which would make Michael a Category 3 storm. It weakened steadily as it traveled inland over the Panhandle.

The speed of the storm - Michael was moving north at 12 miles per hour - gave many people a dwindling window of time to prepare or flee before the arrival of damaging wind, rain, and flooding.

The Carolinas are still recovering from Hurricane Florence, which left dozens dead and is estimated to have caused billions of dollars in damage last month.

Authorities have warned that the storm's death toll was likely to climb as they were able to head into the areas - such as Mexico Beach, Florida - that endured particular damage this week.
