Two astronauts from the US and Russia were safe after an emergency landing Thursday in the steppes of Kazakhstan following the failure of a Russian booster rocket carrying them to the International Space Station.

The Russia Soyuz rocket was carrying a Russian and United States astronaut on board.

An American astronaut and a Russian cosmonaut returned safely to Earth Thursday after a Russian booster rocket carrying them to the International Space Station failed shortly after launch.

But they got into trouble and were forced to make an emergency exit.

Russian and United States space officials said the crew had to make an emergency landing in Kazakhstan, and primed search and rescue crews ready to reach the expected landing site.
