The third-most powerful hurricane to hit the US mainland in recorded history left a wide path of destruction, destroying homes and shopping centres and felling trees that killed at least two people in Florida and Georgia. Officials hadn't immediately confirmed the man's name. More than 380,000 homes and businesses were without power at the height of the storm.

The hurricane reached wind speeds of over 150 miles per hour when it made landfall between Tyndall Air Force Base and Mexico Beach, just south of Panama City, according to NASA. By 8pm, it was down to a category 1. A unsafe storm surge continued along the coastal Florida panhandle; a National Ocean Service station in Apalachicola was reporting 5 feet of water above the ground level. Roofs were peeled away, sent airborne, and homes were split open by fallen trees.

The stunning scope of Hurricane Michael's rampage started coming into focus Thursday, as dawn in Panama City, Florida revealed a sprawling mess of nearly unimaginable devastation wrought by the third-most powerful hurricane in recorded history to lash the US mainland.

Mexico Beach councilwoman Linda Albrecht told CNN she fears she won't have a home to go back to after the hurricane sweeps through the state. Water seeped into her fourth floor apartment When she dared to look outside, water levels were grazing the fronds of tall palm trees on the beach. How can this happen?

"We haven't seen her since the tree hit the den". "That's the only thing I can imagine".

In Panama City, plywood and metal flew off the front of a Holiday Inn Express. It moved so fast that people didn't' have much time to prepare, and emergency authorities lamented that many ignored the warnings and seemed to think they could ride it out.

Emily Hindle lies on the floor at an evacuation shelter set up at Rutherford High School, in advance of Hurricane Michael, which is expected to make landfall today, in Panama City Beach, Fla., Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018.

There is "one hurricane-related fatality", said Olivia Smith, public information officer for the Gadsden County Board of County Commissioners, adding that the incident was "debris-related". Ranked as a Category 4, the disaster ruined the town's commercial industry and its status as a major port whilst claiming the lives of up to 12,000 inhabitants.

"It really started as a tropical storm, and then it went to Category 1, then it was Category 2 and before you know it, it was Category 4", O'Shaughnessy said.

She could not say what time the death occurred or give any details about the victim. Other parts of the state in the path of the storm have reported storm surges of up to 5 feet.

"Storm surge will be the most damaging aspect of the storm", says Kottlowski. The storm has 100 miles per hour winds. The roar from the hurricane sounded like an airplane taking off. "THIS IS A WORST CASE SCENARIO for the Florida Panhandle!" the agency tweeted.

Unprecedented? This could be the first time a 4 or stronger hurricane has ever made landfall in the Florida panhandle, per TWC.

Governor Nathan Deal has already declared a state of emergency for 108 counties in Georgia. Some 17,000 utility restoration workers were also on call.

Hurricane Michael will continue dumping rain on the area until later this evening.

Multiple airports were closed on Wednesday, including Tallahassee International Airport, Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport, Pensacola International Airport and Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the core of Michael will move across central and eastern Georgia Thursday morning, and then over southern and central SC later in the day. Up to a foot of rainfall was forecast for some areas, still recovering from Hurricane Florence's flooding. A little over a day later, it had transformed into a monster. Expected landfall is mid-afternoon.

Panama City looked like a war zone after being battered for almost three hours by strong winds and heavy rains.

"Satellite images of Michael's evolution on Tuesday night were, in a word, jaw-dropping", wrote Bob Henson, a meteorologist with weather site Weather Underground.

Warm water is the energy that fuels hurricanes, and the Gulf water is 4 to 5 degrees warmer than normal.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said early Thursday that the eye of Michael was about 90 miles (144 kilometers) northeast of Macon, Georgia and about 45 miles (72 kilometers) west of Augusta.
