Climate change: Why 1.5 is the new magic number

Catherine McKenna Landmark UN climate report warns time quickly running out

Global CO2 emissions may need to peak around 2020.

At the Paris Agreement in 2015‚ 2 degrees was set as the ceiling we should aim to stay under‚ but that has now shifted to 1.5 degrees.

Green Car Reports respectfully reminds its readers that the scientific validity of climate change is not a topic for debate in our comments. And at the moment we're headed in a direction where that won't happen.

He was talking to reporters on the sidelines of an event to release a report on "Strengthening Forest Fire Management in India", jointly prepared by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the World Bank. However, the world has already warmed about 1 deg C since pre-industrial times.

Even if warming is kept at or just below 1.5 degrees C, the impacts will be widespread and significant. "This points out that every fraction of a degree really does matter".

Staying within the 1.5 degrees C target, instead of 2 degrees C, would result in the global sea level rising 3.9 inches less by 2100, reducing flooding.

Industrial systems: More technological innovation is needed, to help mitigate warming and to help people adapt. Settling for 2 degrees would be a death sentence for people in many parts of Africa. Coral reefs would have a chance to survive.

The report suggests that coral reefs would decline by 70-90 percent with global warming of 1.5°C, whereas virtually all ( 99 percent) would be lost with 2ºC. At 2 degrees, that will be more like once per decade. Risks to food security and water, heat exposure, drought and coastal submergence all increase significantly even for a 1.5°C rise. Essential for pollinating crops, they will be more likely to lose half their habitat at two degrees than 1.5. Working Group 1 Co-Chair Valerie Masson-Delmotte notes there is one key message throughout the report.

Gales and heavy rain to end the week
Gusts of up to 130KPH could be expected when the warning comes into place from 10pm on Thursday night. Rain will then hit Edinburgh on Friday afternoon, becoming increasingly heavier into the evening.

The world needs to make decisions now for the future.

While there are steps to be taken they do need ambitious leaders who are willing to take "rapid and far-reaching" means in all aspects of society from land management, energy, industry, buildings, transport, and cities. This would require a massive swing to renewable energy, with any residual emissions being scrubbed from the atmosphere using carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS), and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies.

A landmark United Nations report paints a dire picture of the catastrophic consequences the world will face if immediate action is not taken to limit the global warming to 1.5°C, warning that at 2°C, the world could see 10 cm more global sea level rise, loss of all coral-reefs and worsening food shortages.

Fifteen countries and the EU climate commissioner, Miguel Arias Canete, had called on the bloc to bring its emissions reductions goal in line with the 2015 Paris climate accord, but that proposal was rejected by Eastern European countries.

This report shows the longer we leave it to act, the more hard, the more expensive and the more risky it will be.

Today, we are not on track to meet any of these goals. "There's certainly things that we'll need to invest in more to develop the next generation of solutions".

However, they warn that the Liberal government's approach will undermine Canada's economic competitiveness and saddle consumers with higher costs. When the next climate talks happen this December, the new report is created to give governments the incentive to go much further, faster.
