Pres. Trump Hosts Ceremonial Swearing-in For Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh

Trump decries calls to impeach Kavanaugh as an ‘insult to American public’ Kavanaugh seeks new tone after bitter Supreme Court Justice confirmation fight
Ellis Copeland | 10 October, 2018, 04:17

US President Donald Trump has said it is "an insult to the American public" for Democrats to consider impeaching Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and claimed the allegations made against him were a hoax.

The bitter partisan fight over Mr Kavanaugh's nomination became a firestorm after sexual misconduct allegations emerged involving Mr Kavanaugh.

Last week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation completed a report on sexual misconduct allegations against Mr Kavanaugh - but the findings have not been released to the public.

On Monday evening Kavanaugh, 53, joined family members, friends and President Trump at the White House for a ceremonial swearing-in ceremony, where the new justice tried to ease the partisan wounds from his confirmation process.

Trump used his introduction of Kavanaugh to slam the judge's opponents.

"On behalf of our nation, I want to apologize to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the bad pain and suffering you have been forced to endure", Mr Trump said at the jurist's White House swearing-in ceremony.

The president said Kavanaugh overcame intense scrutiny by Democrats who considered him guilty and didn't want to give him due process.

House Democrats' lead in the generic congressional ballot has slightly increased in the wake of the bombshell hearing for now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, according to a newly released survey from CNN - numbers that conflict with some other recent polling and push back on the narrative that the Kavanaugh hearings were a political win for the GOP.

Brett Kavanaugh took the bench with his new Supreme Court colleagues for the first time Tuesday in a jovial atmosphere that was strikingly at odds with the tension and rancor surrounding his high-court confirmation.

People hoping to see Justice Brett Kavanaugh's first day on the Supreme Court bench are waiting in long lines outside the court.

Trump has now put his stamp on the court with his second justice in as many years.

Hundreds of protesters had also swarmed the steps of the Supreme Court. Jackson also worked for Kavanaugh on the appeals court.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Sunday praised his party's senators, whom he said re-established the "presumption of innocence" in confirmation hearings. Either way, he added, for Trump to declare that Kavanaugh was proven innocent is a "wild overstatement to say the least, and very likely an inaccurate read of what happened".

Republicans had hoped to confirm Kavanaugh in time for him to join the court on October 1, the start of the new term. He had already hired four law clerks, all women.

Justice Roberts said: "We wish you a long and happy career in our common calling".

"No one who felt the force of that anger could possibly believe that Kavanaugh might actually be a detached and impartial judge". The court's two oldest justices are Democratic appointees: Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 85 and Stephen Breyer is 80.
