ANC and opposition parties welcome Mboweni, praise Nene

The decision, made by President Cyril Ramaphosa, comes after Nene chose to resign from the post on Tuesday morning following a public outcry sparked by his public apology last week over his multiple meetings with the Gupta family at their private home. Ramaphosa promised to curb corruption that has contributed to South Africa's economic problems, though critics question whether he has the will and clout to scrutinize top levels of the ruling African National Congress party ahead of elections next year.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Tuesday that he is accepting the departure of Nhlanhla Nene, who submitted a resignation letter earlier in the day after he admitted to having a series of meetings with the Gupta brothers at their mansion in Johannesburg and other locations from 2010 to 2014. Five months after refusing to sign a letter of guarantee that would have given the project to Russia's state-controlled nuclear energy company, Mr. Nene was sacked from Mr. Zuma's cabinet and was briefly replaced by a pro-Gupta minister.

Nene apologised after giving testimony to the inquiry, which is probing allegations of systematic corruption under Zuma's government involving the three Gupta brothers. The public outcry regarding the issue of state capture has made Nene's untruthfulness that much worse.

"These visits do cast a shadow on my conduct as a public office bearer", Nene said in a statement.

Tito Mboweni, a former Reserve Bank governor, will replace him.

The ANC forced Zuma to quit as president in February, clearing the way for his 65-year-old deputy and party leader Ramaphosa to take over.

"He was lucky because Nene is the kind of person who would admit when he has made a mistake without being pushed".

He must also reassure investors and credit-rating companies of credible plans to stabilise the debt and revive growth in the mid-term budget on October 24.

The inquiry, which opened in August, is investigating allegations that Zuma organised the plunder of government departments and public enterprises in a scandal known as "state capture".

Opposition parties have called for his resignation.

The IFP said it was concerned that Ramaphosa did not use the opportunity to also get rid of controversial ministers Bathabile Dlamini and Malusi Gigaba, but welcomed Mboweni's appointment.

"The Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS)‚ which is supposed to be a statement to build confidence amongst all important economic role players‚ cannot‚ and should not‚ be delivered by a minister who was part of the Gupta criminal syndicate".
