Week Ahead: Kavanaugh Confirmed, Sworn In - And What Comes Next

"I do hope that it reminds us that we can take very small steps to be gracious with one another and maybe those small gracious steps can lead to more", she said. Lacy had been working at the White House in support of Kavanaugh's nomination. "The fact that they were willing to use Dr. Ford's story that was uncorroborated to launch character assassinations on Judge Kavanaugh did not sit well with voters".

Kavanaugh was officially sworn in Saturday night following the 50-48 vote in which he was confirmed by the Senate. Kavanaugh's opponents are furious with Collins, realizing that President Donald Trump's nominee is hardly the moderate she claims.

Kavanaugh, now the country's 114th Supreme Court justice, could give conservatives a solid 5-4 ideological edge on the court and shape rulings for decades.

He denied the allegations, but almost all Senate Democrats voted against his confirmation.

U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan, an Alaska Republican, told the Washington Post after Kavanaugh was confirmed in one of the closest votes in history for a new justice that he believes in the presumption of innocence.

Trump had once said he found her testimony credible.

Christine Blasey Ford has not been able to move back home since she came forward with allegations of sexual assault against Brett Kavanaugh due to the "unending" death threats she is receiving, according to her lawyer Debra Katz.

"Judge Kavanaugh's emotional, politically charged and combative defense on September 27 that followed Dr. Ford's appearance was enough to reassure most of the Senate GOP caucus, but it wasn't enough to secure his confirmation".

"We all toughed it out together and I have to thank the Republican senators that fought so hard for this because it wasn't easy", Trump said. Yet Kavanaugh is joining under a cloud.

Looking ahead, McConnell said Democrats certainly "could" refuse to hold any nominations of any kind should they regain control of the Senate, but argued it wouldn't be "sustainable politically".

Trump was in Kansas to campaign for Kris Kobach, secretary of state and the Republican nominee for governor, and Steve Watkins, the Republican nominee in the 2nd Congressional District of eastern Kansas.

New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler said if Democrats win the House in November, they would open an investigation into Kavanaugh.

Noting that only one Supreme Court justice has ever been impeached, Coons said the Senate needed to show leadership and seek to heal the country.

The pair shared a hug on the Senate floor following the climactic vote.

"Putting strict constructionists, relatively young, on the courts for lifetime appointments is the best way to have a long-term positive impact on America", McConnell said, "And today is a seminal moment in that effort". But when asked again Sunday about it, he sought to clarify that a Senate case in 1880 suggested inaction on a nominee only when the chamber was controlled by the party opposing the president.

In a Fox News interview the night before the full Senate vote, McConnell repeatedly called the protestors a "mob", saying they "stood up to the mob" and that they "relearned" the lesson that "you should not allow mobs to intimidate you".
