Unreported Google data exposure affects hundreds of thousands

Google shuts down Google+ after a massive data breach which potentially leaked information of over 500,000 users Google+ to Shut Down Following Bug That Exposed 500K Profiles

Unfortunately, whether you've forgotten about it or not, if you have a Google+ account, your data may have been put at risk. No developer exploited the vulnerability or misused data, the review found.

The company said that it often notifies users when there are security issues and flaws and user data is affected, but its privacy and data protection office said the bug did not meet the threshold.

Shares of its parent company Alphabet Inc, however, were down 1.5 percent at $1150.75 in response to what was the latest in a run of privacy issues to hit the United States' big tech companies.

Google, replying to requests for comment, defended its decision not to disclose.

While Google says there is no clear misuse of profile data that occurred as a result of this breach, MacMillan of the Journal says it raises questions about the company's commitment to user privacy.

Google+ launched with much fanfare in 2011, positioned as the search giant's answer to Facebook. "Underlining this, as part of our Project Strobe audit, we discovered a bug in one of the Google+ People APIs", Google said in its announcement. The company says that it also will cut back on the amount of data belonging to Android and Gmail users that is available to outside developers.

Google Plus is shown as it appeared in 2013.

Google did not specify how long the software flaw existed, or why it waited to disclose it. This leaked data included full names, email addresses, birth dates, gender, profile photos, places lived, occupation and relationship status. Google adds that it "cannot confirm" which users were affected, but over 500,000 of them could have been.

Google Plus will remain an internal networking option for organizations that buy Google's G Suite, a bundle of apps for creating documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Facebook's breakdown exposed the personal information of as many as 87 million of its users to Cambridge Analytica, a data mining firm affiliated with President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign.

Google came under criticism for refusing to send a top executive to a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on September 5 about efforts to counteract foreign influence in US elections and political discourse. An empty chair was left for Google after the committee rejected Google's top lawyer as a witness. Google is also following from its limiting of Gmail scans by limiting which applications - namely, down to email apps - can do so. Users (whoever they might be) have had plenty of time to download and migrate their data before the platform's final days arrive in August of next year.
