"Based on their initial findings, the police believe that the journalist was killed by a team especially sent to Istanbul and who left the same day", the official told AFP.

Khashoggi has been an outspoken critic of the Saudi government, causing him to leave his home country previous year to live in exile in the United States.

Erdogan told reporters Sunday, "I am following the [incident] and we will inform the world whatever the outcome" of the official probe.

Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said "God willing, we will not be faced with the situation we do not desire" when asked by journalists about Khashoggi. His Turkish fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, who waited for him outside the consulate, said he never came out of the building.

"I assure you that the reports that suggest that Jamal Khashoggi went missing in the Consulate in Istanbul or that the Kingdom's authorities have detained him or killed him are absolutely false, and baseless", Prince Khaled said in the statement released on Monday evening.

His disappearance caused a huge flutter and Turkish establishment was under pressure to find out Khashoggi's whereabouts.

A former newspaper editor in Saudi Arabia and adviser to its former head of intelligence, Khashoggi left the country previous year saying he feared retribution for his criticism of Saudi policy in the Yemen war and its crackdown on dissent.

Turkish investigators have hinted they know more about the disappearance than they have disclosed.

After leaving the consulate grounds, three cars turned left on to a main road while the remaining three turned right. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) said in a string of tweets Monday that "if there is any truth to the allegations of wrongdoing by the Saudi government it would be devastating to the US-Saudi relationship and there will be a heavy price to be paid - economically and otherwise". President Erdoğan of Turkey has left no stone unturned to expose Saudi Arabia for the "murder most foul" to assert Turkey's supremacy in the region.

A Saudi source at the consulate has denied that Khashoggi had been killed at the mission and said that the accusations were baseless.

Ankara sought permission Sunday to carry out a search after the foreign ministry summoned the Saudi ambassador for a second time, Turkish television reported.

The Saudi Consulate insists Khashoggi left its building, contradicting Turkish officials who say they believe he is still there.

In recent days, Americans lawmakers from across the political spectrum have warned the affair could harm US-Saudi relations.

"We call for cooperation between Turkey and Saudi Arabia to conduct a prompt and impartial investigation into the circumstances of Mr Khashoggi's disappearance and to make the findings public", United Nations human rights spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told a Geneva news briefing.

He moved to the U.S. more than a year ago, where he continued his commentary about his country both in print and on television. "State Department senior officials have spoken with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through diplomatic channels about this matter", he said.

He is a high-profile critic of the crown prince.

Officials in Saudi Arabia did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Saudi Arabia is a longtime ally of the United States, but on Monday senior USA officials expressed alarm over Khashoggi's disappearance.
