Indonesian rescue workers will stop searching for the bodies of victims of an quake and tsunami on the island of Sulawesi on Thursday, the national disaster mitigation agency said Sunday.

Hidayat was not on Sulawesi last on Friday when the 7.5 magnitude natural disaster struck, triggering a phenomenon called soil liquefaction, which turns the ground into a roiling quagmire.

People attend a mass prayer for Palu at Talise beach one week after the tsunami hit Palu, Indonesia, October 5, 2018.

"They were found in front of my brother's house opposite the mosque", Rahman said.

"Based on reports from the (village) heads of Balaroa and Petobo, there are about 5,000 people who have not been found", agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told reporters Sunday.

As the sun slipped behind the mountains and a gentle breeze blew onshore, hundreds of people gathered on an Indonesian beach Friday to chant a Muslim prayer - and remember those they lost - one week after a massive natural disaster and tsunami ravaged the area, killing more than 1,500 people.

The tens of thousands left homeless by the disaster are scattered across Palu and beyond, many squatting outside their ruined homes or bunkered down in makeshift camps and entirely dependent on handouts to survive.

After days of delays, global aid is slowly making its way to the disaster zone, where the United Nations says nearly 200,000 people need humanitarian assistance. Figures for more remote areas, some just re-connected to the outside world by road, are trickling in.

"An 11-truck convoy will depart from Makassar carrying about 83,000 litres of water, in 19-litre plastic jugs that can be reused by the people in the area", IOM spokesperson Paul Dillon said, adding the convoy was bound for Donggala.

The aid is part of a $3.6 million relief commitment, including more than 50 medical professionals, that Australia made on Wednesday.

In a rare move, Indonesia's government has appealed for global help to cope with the tragedy unfolding on Sulawesi island.

Indonesia's disaster agency said the death toll had climbed to 1649, with at least 265 people still missing, although it said that number could be higher.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman of Indonesia's Mitigation and Disaster Agency (BNPB), holds a second news conference to brief reporters, September 29, 2018.

Sick of waiting for help, villagers themselves have been searching, Hasnah said.

The grim news comes as relief efforts were ramped up to reach 200,000 people in desperate of help after days of delays.

"The search for the victim is expected to be completed on Thursday", Sutopo told Xinhua.

Thousands of survivors continued to stream out of Palu to nearby cities in the aftermath of the disaster.

"They are people who want to leave Palu temporarily to stay at their relatives houses in their respective cities, because they are still traumatized [by the quake] and struggle to meet their daily needs", he said.
