They then shone bright lights onto the barrier draw results and from across the other side of Circular Quay, the numbers of the race horses displayed on the heritage building were obscured.

NSW Racing has suspended betting for The Everest horse race.

Hundreds of demonstrators flickered torches on Tuesday at the sails of Sydney's Opera House, aiming the light rays to disrupt horse-racing projected on its facade, in a protest against the use of the building to promote gambling.

The activist group has criticised Jones for attacking Herron, calling her a "tyrant" and questioning her credentials after she said she wouldn't allow the Opera House to carry advertising for The Everest Cup horse race on its sails.

"Racing NSW Stewards today have conducted the barrier draw for the 2018 The TAB Everest in preparation for this evening's barrier draw event", a Racing NSW release said.

"In an official statement, Racing NSW said: "[We have] made the decision to conduct the draw prior to the event to circumvent any security risks that may exist".

Meanwhile, radio commentator Alan Jones, who last week launched into an aggressive argument with Sydney Opera House CEO Louise Herron over the ad, has apologised for his remarks.

The apology comes as the Change-org petition pushing support for Herron and for the Opera House to remain "billboard free" now has more than 235,000 signatures and was delivered to NSW state parliament this morning.

NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian and Prime Minister Scott Morrison have backed the government's move to allow the advertisement despite calls to reverse the decision.

"So to Louise and those people who've been offended, I apologise".

"Our house is a precious gift to the world", Mr Hall said.

Protesters have targeted the planned projection of The Everest horse race colours and numbers onto the sails of the Sydney Opera House.

"The Opera House management has approved exemptions under the Heritage Act to make these types of decisions", the spokesman said.
