Last week, before the Senate voted to confirm Kavanaugh 51-49 Saturday, Trump mocked Christine Blasey Ford, who had accused Kavanaugh of trying to rape her when they were in high school.

Ford had hesitated to put her name to the allegations, telling The Washington Post that she feared upending her life while leaving Kavanaugh's confirmation process unaffected.

"With Anita Hill, there was a full FBI investigation before there was ever a hearing", Lisa Banks, another of Ford's attorneys, told NBC, referring to the woman who accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment after he was nominated to the Supreme Court in 1991. "For 12 years, I saw him rule where the law led and I expect him to do the same on the Supreme Court", said Justin Walker, a University of Louisville law professor and former Kavanaugh law clerk.

He was officially sworn in hours after the Senate narrowly confirmed him Saturday to a lifetime seat on the country's highest court.

Collins, who is pro-choice, also said she felt confident that Kavanaugh would not try to overturn Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court's landmark abortion case.

"It unleashed something inside me".

It can take sworn testimony from all the witnesses who had volunteered to be interviewed by the F.B.I., but were ignored.

The confirmation means Trump has succeeded in having his two picks seated on the court - tilting it decidedly to the right in a major coup for the Republican leader less than halfway through his term. "Everything was uncorroborated", he told reporters in Topeka, Kansas. "I stand before you today on the heels of a tremendous victory for our nation", he said to roars.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Saturday that "nothing unifies Republicans like a court fight".

McConnell on Monday argued that if control of the White House and the Senate had been reversed in 2016, Democrats wouldn't have filled a vacancy either. Then, as soon as Kavanaugh was confirmed, Trump said he believed Kavanaugh's denial over Ford's allegation.

In the Senate chamber, the vote was disrupted on several occasions by angry protests from the gallery.

When Vice President Mike Pence, who presided over the vote, exited the Senate, he was booed and heckled by onlookers outside until he ducked into his limousine. He asserted that "we simply followed the tradition of America".

Demonstrators protest against Kavanaugh in front of the Supreme Court.

He said "radical Democrats" have become "an angry, left-wing mob" and "too risky and too extreme to govern". And, that's what they've become. That outrage could have possibly made the November elections even more volatile and nastier than they will be.

"It is a sad day, but the recourse will have to be on election day", Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar told reporters.

Flake was satisfied with the Federal Bureau of Investigation report and voted for Kavanaugh's confirmation Saturday afternoon.

The choice of Kavanaugh to replace retired justice Anthony Kennedy was controversial from the start - but the initial focus was exclusively on the conservative views held by the married father of two. But she did not say Kavanaugh or Judge assaulted the girls in the bedroom, nor did she provide the names of corroborating witnesses.

Protesters occupy the Hart Senate Office Building during a rally against Kavanaugh in Washington.

The 50-48-1 vote reflected pro-Kavanaugh Republican Sen.

Democrats fought tooth and nail to stop Kavanaugh's candidacy, claiming that the accomplished, conservative-minded judge was not suited to the Supreme Court, which will now tilt decisively to a more Republican-friendly panel.

But independent court analysts say Kavanaugh is likely to lean toward more conservative rulings.
