Healthcare job growth continues; hospitals add 12K positions in September

U.S. Employment Rises Much Less Than Expected In September BACK TO WORK: Unemployment Drops to 3.7%, Lowest Since DECEMBER 1969
Orlando Vargas | 08 October, 2018, 06:24

Employment in the USA rose by much less than expected in the month of September, according to a report released by the Labor Department on Friday.

The prime-age participation rate, or share of people 25 to 54 years old in the labor force, fell to 81.8 percent in September, and has ticked down in all except three months this year. Average hourly earnings rose from $27.06 to $27.16 - an annual rate increase of 4.5 percent and bringing year-over-year increases to 2.9 percent.

The modest job gains came after private payrolls firm ADP said hiring surged 230,000 in the month, but the two reports often diverge since they calculate employment differently. This is the lowest unemployment rate in the country since 1969.

The report keeps alive the debate about how much slack may still be left in the labor market, and whether the reality matches the Fed's own estimates of the jobless rate under which inflation would start picking up - the so-called non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment, or Nairu. Unemployment rates for women (down 0.1), Hispanics (up 0.1), Asians (down 0.1) and African-Americans (down 0.3) showed mixed changes. Job gains in July and August were revised up a combined 87,000 from the original reports.

A month ahead of hard-fought congressional elections, the result was sure to delight US President Donald Trump, who has eagerly taken credit for America's extended run of economic expansion even as his Republican party faces a possible rebuke from disenchanted voters. With the bigger than expected decrease, the unemployment rate fell to its lowest level since hitting 3.5% in December of 1969.

"I would view this as a full-employment jobs report", Alan Krueger, a Princeton University economics professor and former head of the White House Council of Economic Advisers under Barack Obama, said on Bloomberg Television. Often when wages increase, employers may begin to use more automation or equipment to reduce human labor requirements. In the Household Survey, employment rose 420,000, reversing August's 423,000 fall.

The tightening of the labor market is leading to an increase in wages.
