Knight, 53, pleaded no contest to manslaughter earlier this month in connection with the death of Terry Carter. The law dictates that in a situation such as Knight's, a manslaughter sentence is doubled and combined with an extra six years.

The co-founder of the influential label Death Row Records pleaded no contest on September 20 to one count of voluntary manslaughter for the hit-and-run killing of 55-year-old Terry Carter.

One of music's biggest names, Marion "Suge" Knight, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for his role in the murder of a businessman during a gangland fight in Los Angeles.

His previous convictions make him ineligible for probation, Los Angeles Superior Court Ronald Coen ruled Thursday.

Members of Terry Carter's family addressed the court including daughter Crystal, who called Knight "a disgusting, selfish disgrace to the human species".

The maximum penalty for voluntary manslaughter in California is 11 years. The "Dear Mama" rapper and Suge Knight, co-founder of Death Row Records, had a close-knit business relationship.

At his pinnacle in the mid-1990s, Knight was putting out rap records that are now considered classics from Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur.

His lawyers said Knight was acting in self-defence as he fled armed attackers when he ran over Mr Carter and Mr Sloan.

Suge's prior felony convictions also made this sentencing much harsher.

"Straight Outta Compton" tells the story of the founding of the rap group N.W.A.

Yes, Suge J. Knight is the latest person to claim Shakur-who died in September 1996 after being shot in a drive-by, while in a vehicle with Suge Knight-is still alive. The onetime college football star and "gangsta" rap pioneer eventually lost control of his label in bankruptcy proceedings.

The video shows Knight backing his pickup truck over one man, Cle "Bone" Sloan, who survived, pulling forward and driving over Sloan again, and then fatally striking Carter before driving off. Suge will also be on parole for three years following his prison sentence. He was accused of stealing a camera from a woman and of sending threatening text messages to Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray.
