More Than a Third of American Adults Eat Fast Food Daily

Almost 40% of Americans Eat Fast Food on Any Given Day, Report Says The United States of fast food: CDC reveals 40% of Americans eat fast food every day

The mainstays of take-outs - processed meat, sweetened bread, fried food and fatty sauces - are linked to chronic health conditions such as diabetes and heart failure, the number one killer in the world. About 38 percent of adults aged 40 to 59 ate fast food daily while just 24 percent of those aged 60 and above did the same.

The survey compiled by the National Center for Health Statistics shows between 2013 and 2016, more than 36 percent of adults - or more than 1 in 3 - consume fast food on a given day.

When asked to recall what they had eaten in the past 24 hours, about 45 percent of consumers in their 20s and 30s reported having eaten fast food over the past day. The CDC didn't say whether the consumption figure has risen or declined since 2016. "Fast food has been associated with poor diet and increased risk of obesity".

If you're an adult in America, there's a better than 1 in 3 chance that you'll eat fast food today - if you haven't already.

"We focused on fast food for this report because fast food has played an important role in the American diet in recent decades", she said.

Perhaps surprisingly, the CDC found that fast food consumption grew with increasing family income.

Fast food consumption also varied by sex. And among high-income families (those with incomes above 350% of the poverty line), 42% dined on fast food on a typical day.

The study, by CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (you can read it in full here), found that nearly 40 per cent of Americans admit to eating fast food every day.

The report also found that a higher percentage of non-Hispanic black adults - 42.4% - said they consumed fast food than non-Hispanic white adults at 37.6%, non-Hispanic Asian adults at 30.6% and Hispanic adults at 35.5%. The researchers found that men eat more fast food than women. Among men and women who consumed fast food, a higher percentage of men ate it for lunch, while a higher percentage of women ate it as a snack.

Liz Weinandy, a registered dietitian at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, conceded that it's unsurprising that younger people eat the most fast food, but she said the rates are very concerning. "Consumers can find nutritional information on calories on the menu in most fast food establishments and restaurants".

Weinandy says policies put in place at the federal level, similar to former first lady Michelle Obama's 'Let's Move!' campaign, could help this trend decrease. But "what we should be scared of is double cheeseburgers, french fries and large amounts of sugary beverages".

She believes that policymakers, doctors and health food advocates need to "beat fast food companies at their own game" in order to turn things around.
