MI man's doorstop rock turns out to be a $100k meteorite

A man who used a meteorite as a doorstop for 30 years got a huge surprise when he discovered it was potentially worth $100, ooo (around P5.4 million).

He took the rock to Mona Siberscu at Central Michigan University's College of Science and Engineering.

Scientists studied this space rock at Central Michigan University. He and his father dug it out the next morning and it was still warm. The farmer claimed the rock had fallen in the 1930s and that the new owner could have it since it was "part of the property".

The man told Sirbescu that he kept the rock for the next 30 years, even after moving away from the farm.

The Grand Rapids man was apparently inspired to investigate after seeing news of meteorite hunters finding shards and selling them for thousands of dollars after a meteor sighting in January in the Detroit area. The professor sent a slice of the rock to a colleague at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., who reportedly confirmed her discovery. "I wonder what mine is worth", Mazurek said in the release.

The 22-pound meteorite was examined under x-ray fluorescence scanning which determined that it was composed of 88 percent iron and 12 percent nickel (a metal that is relatively rare on Earth).

"What typically happens with these at this point is that meteorites can either be sold and shown in a museum or sold to collectors and sellers looking to make a profit", Sirbescu said.

Kavanaugh's confirmation looking likely after Federal Bureau of Investigation probe
"I might have been too emotional at times", he wrote in the op-ed headlined "I am an Independent, Impartial Judge". The Kavanaugh question followed some female Republicans on the campaign trail Wednesday.

Regardless of how much that is, Sirbescu feels that she, CMU and her students already have benefited.

Sirbescu said this is the sixth-largest meteorite on record to be found in MI.

It has been named the "Edmore" meteorite after the town in which the farm is located.

"Just think, what I was holding is a piece of the early solar system that literally fell into our hands", Sirbescu said of the meteorite.

The Smithsonian and a mineral museum in ME are considering purchasing the meteorite for display, according to CMU.

Mazurek says that when he sells the meteorite, he'll donate some of the money to the university.
