Riyadh, which is the world's top oil exporter and the largest OPEC producer, has been criticized by Trump for high petroleum prices.

"Iran is the main supportive factor and is a test to the spare capacity of Saudi Arabia", said Petromatrix analyst Olivier Jakob.

The state-run Saudi Press Agency reported the call, saying "the efforts to maintain supplies to ensure the stability of the oil market and ensure the growth of the global economy" were discussed by the two leaders.

Trump made an undiplomatic remark about close ally Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, saying he warned Saudi Arabia's King Salman he would not last in power "for two weeks" without the backing of the USA military.

The call grabbed the attention of oil traders and hedge funds, who are watching closely for any signs that the USA might take action against Saudi Arabia or other members of OPEC after Trump used his address at the United Nations General Assembly in NY on September 25 to hammer home those views.

Oil prices have been climbing as buyers have already started steering clear of Iran before the implementation of US sanctions starting November 4. The price per barrel was around $50 in October 2017.

Saudi Arabia has always been a major buyer of US weaponry, spending billions of dollars on advanced systems, a point Trump was keen to make when Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman visited the White House in March.

The US crude oil price is pausing for breath after its strong advance ahead of US sanctions on Iran, which take effect on November 4.

But despite the Trump's comment, his administration has kept a close relationship with the Saudi kingdom.

The US military was stationed in Saudi Arabia from the first Gulf War against Iraq in 1990 to 2003, when then Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld announced pullout.
