Amazon says it is offering raises to all hourly employees in its USA warehouses and call centers, a move that follows criticism of the pay and working conditions for the retail giant's lowest-paid workers. "We're excited about this change and encourage our competitors and other large employers to join us".

The company came under fire for producing an anti-union video that suggested employers push back against efforts to introduce a "living wage".

What's more, Amazon (amzn)-the second-largest private-sector employer in the USA -is now lobbying the government to increase the federally-mandated minimum wage, set nine years ago, from $7.25 an hour.

The move, announced Tuesday, applies to all full-time, part-time and seasonal employees across the USA, as well as temporary staff, even those retained through agencies.

Amazon has faced criticism from labor rights groups and others over pay and working conditions at its warehouses.

"We listened to our critics, thought hard about what we wanted to do, and decided we want to lead", said Amazon's founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, as the company announced the new pay scale Tuesday.

According to Amazon this change will affect a total of 37,000 staff members, 17,000 of which are full time and 20,000 are seasonal workers hired for the Christmas rush. His Twitter account, which has almost 9 million followers, frequently points out the disparity between Amazon's median employee pay and the vast fortune of CEO Jeff Bezos.

The company also said it would press for a change to the United States minimum wage level.

"We will be working to gain Congressional support for an increase in the federal minimum wage".

The company's announcement comes just ahead of the holiday hiring season.

Retailer Target Corp raised its minimum hourly wage last year to $11 and promised to raise it to $15 an hour by the end of 2020, while the world's largest retailer Walmart raised its minimum wage to $11 an hour earlier this year.
