The year 2018 has been a tough sail for Facebook.

Facebook users were shocked as the news spread about how almost 50 million Facebook accounts were compromised by an attack that gave hackers the ability to take over users' accounts.

There are rules regarding the reporting of such a breach and so far Facebook has stuck to them.

Facebook said it logged out around 90m users as a safety precaution, while around 50m were believed to be affected. For example- what is this new breach?

The verbose explanation given by Facebook on its page may not adequately answer all these questions.

The breach is very different than the crisis earlier this year that forced Zuckerberg to testify in the USA congress.

If class-action status is granted, the two plaintiffs are requesting relief, but also punitive damages against Facebook, in the form of a fine, under the California Civil Code.

You didn't forget that Facebook owns Instagram, did you?

The CEO admitted that "View As" feature in Facebook, which had some malfunction, must have played the spoilsport role.

It remains unclear whether the attackers could have gained access to the most sensitive information stored on the network like direct messages.

So what happened? In short, the attackers found a way to trick Facebook into issuing them "access tokens" - basically, digital keys - that let them access other users' accounts as if they were that user.

Life just got worse for the 50 million people caught up in what may be the biggest hack of Facebook ever.

Importantly, if you log into other services with Facebook, this access token would treat you as being logged into those services too.

What is the security token? "As a result, around 90 million people will now have to log back in to Facebook, or any of their apps that use Facebook Login", said Facebook.

Facebook said it spotted the breach after a noticeable spike in user traffic.

When did this breach occur?

How did Facebook get to know about the hack?

However it did acknowledge that the weakness in its code dates back to a change that was made in July 2017, meaning the accounts were vulnerable from that time. Zuckerberg has tried mightily to assure consumers and lawmakers that the site is doing everything in its power to protect personal information while tamping down on foreign meddling during elections.

What is Facebook doing to fix the bug?

Facebook has notified law enforcement authorities about the breach, and has also reset the access tokens of around 90 million users as a precautionary measure.

The company has also reset the access tokens of the 50 million accounts that were known to have been breached, as well as 40 million accounts that have been subject to a "View As" look-up in the past year, as a precaution.

Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook's Head of Cyber Security Policy, told the Telegraph that he was "aware of certain videos describing different elements of the attack" and that the company was "looking into these to make sure people's accounts are protected".
