The rovers are also to perform functions such as measuring the surface temperature on the asteroid ahead of the planned landing of the probe on the asteroid in late October. The tiny body is now located some 186 million miles (300 million kilometers) away from Earth. "The image taken by MINERVA-II-1 during a hop allowed me to relax as a dream of many years came true".

They were released from Hayabusa2 early Friday (U.S. time) at an altitude of 180 feet or so above Ryugu.

Analysis of this information confirmed that at least one of the rovers is moving on the asteroid surface.

Expressing his joy over the success of the project, Takashi Kubota, a spokesman for the space agency, said that he felt awed by the achievement and that it is a real charm of deep space exploration. "We are now working to confirm if there are images capturing the MINERVA-II1 landing", the Hayabusa2 team said via Twitter at about 6 a.m. EDT (1000 GMT) today. After touching down, the small robotic explorers started hopping and floating around to collect images and data. The left-half is the surface of Ryugu, while the white region on the right is due to sunlight. From the surface of Ryugu, MINERVA-II1 sent a radio signal to the ground station via Hayabusa2 S/C.

This computer generated image shows the Ryugu asteroid and the probe Hayabusa2.

Next month, Hayabusa2 will deploy an "impactor" that will explode above the asteroid, shooting a two-kilo copper object into the surface to blast a crater a few metres in diameter. It arrived at Ryugu on June 27, 2018 and is scheduled to depart from the asteroid in December 2019 in order to return to our planet in December 2020. Study of this asteroid could be important for planetary researchers as it may contain organic matter and water.

One of the rovers snapped a photo of Ryugu after it was from its mother-ship Hayabusa2 while another took photos showing a blurry image of both Hayabusa2 and Ryugu just as it was approaching the asteroid. Best of all: They've sent back photographs.
