Christine Blasey Fords testimony sure to be a ‘circus’

US President Donald Trump on Friday questioned the credibility of the woman who has accused Judge Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assaulting her when they were teenagers, saying she would have reported the attack to law enforcement at the time if it were as bad as she has said.

Ford's preference is to testify to the panel next Thursday and she doesn't want Kavanaugh in the same room, her attorney told the panel's staff in a 30-minute call that also touched on security concerns and others issues, according to a Senate aide.

Ford said Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982 when both were high school students in Maryland, an allegation Kavanaugh called "completely false". Kavanaugh has denied all parts of the allegation.

"Grassley says it's not appropriate for the FBI to investigate, and he's insisting Blasey Ford must testify on Monday and has set 10 a.m. Friday as the deadline to hear back from her", Colbert said.

Asking Kavanaugh to go first is "not doable" according to the source, noting he would need to respond to any new accusation that comes up at the hearing. Susan Collins of ME and Jeff Flake of Arizona - said that unless Ford testified Monday they would move on to Kavanagh's vote.

Grassley's committee wants prepared testimony from Ford by Friday and an answer on whether she will accept its invitation to testify to the panel on Monday, either publicly or privately.

It is also not traditional for the accused to testify first and not have an opportunity for rebuttal.

She continues to believe that a full non-partisan investigation of this matter is needed and she is willing to cooperate with the Committee.

"It is not the FBI's role to investigate a matter such as this", wrote Grassley, who also sent a letter to committee Democrats formally rejecting their bid for the FBI to investigate.

No decisions have been made on if Ford's requests will be honored.

Lawyers for Ford told Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley in a letter earlier this week that she has faced death threats that have compelled her family to leave their home.

Brett Kavanaugh: Sexual assault accuser 'needs more time'
The Senate, the committee chairman notes, "and only the Senate", is tasked with vetting a president's Supreme Court nominee. Ford's lawyers said on Tuesday she would testify before the committee only if the FBI first investigated her allegation.

Ford went public with her accusation over the weekend in a Washington Post interview and said Monday through her lawyer that she was ready to testify. But nothing makes a memory rush back faster than questioning under oath, after the witness has just heard the words "under penalty of perjury".

"I think it's a very sad situation", he said, asking, "Why didn't somebody call the Federal Bureau of Investigation 36 years ago?. If she doesn't show up, that would be unfortunate", Trump added, calling the situation "very unfair" to his nominee.

She said Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed and groped her, putting his hand over her mouth when she tried to scream. Grassley said he was disturbed to learn of the threats.

By refusing to call Mark Judge as a witness, and refusing to direct the FBI to investigate, Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the president are in lockstep.

But US President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have already ruled that out. Professional investigators understand only too well the inherent unreliability of allegations raised in the manner Ford's have been raised.

For Trump, approval of Kavanaugh would cement conservative control of the Supreme Court and advance a White House effort to tilt the American judiciary more to the right.

"Even more nominees will be confirmed".

Ford alleges that at a party in high school, Kavanaugh pushed her into a bedroom along with his former classmate and that Kavanaugh attempted to remove her clothes.

Shortly before Mr. Trump sent his tweets Friday morning, senior White House aide Kellyanne Conway was telling reporters that Republicans had no reason to attack Ford.
