Man dies after apparent shark bite on Cape Cod

- Police say a 26-year-old man has died after being attacked by a shark off a beach in Masachusetts.

"Life saving measures were attempted on beach", state police spokesman David Procopio said in an email. Two signs at the top of the dune at Newcomb Hollow Beach alert visitors that the beach is closed to swimming, Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018, in Wellfleet, Mass.

There was no immediate word on the type of shark involved in Saturday's attack, but it marks the first time since 1936 that someone has been killed by a shark in MA.

Just last month, a 61-year-old man suffered puncture wounds following another Cape Cod shark attack.

He sustained severe injuries to his legs and is still recovering in hospital.

'There'll be a determination later about what the town wants to do with the beaches going forward, ' Wellfleet Police Lieutenant Michael Hurley said. The man's friend had to drag him to shore.

Chris Hartsgrove, acting deputy chief of Cape Cod National Seashore, said the injuries appeared to be from a shark. Booth said. "It was like right out of that movie Jaws". This has turned into Amity Island real quick out here, ' Booth said WBUR.

"We've been surfing all morning right here and they were just further down", she said of the two boogie boarders.

The shark struck in waters around 300 yards off Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet at 2:25pm local time (7.:25pm GMT) on Saturday. He also said the heavy presence of seals and quickly moving or jumping throngs of fish may signal the presence of a shark.

Before the August bite in Truro, the most recent shark bite on the Cape occurred in 2017, according to the Global Shark Attack File, when a great white nibbled Cleveland Bigelow's boogie board in the waters off of Marconi Beach in Wellfleet.

"It is truly unfortunate that this had to happen", Beaty said.
