News that the storm could plow through SC after landfall came shortly after McMaster lifted his mandatory-evacuation order for Beaufort County and many other areas south of Charleston. As the hurricane center says, "Florence is expected to slow down considerably by late Thursday into Friday, and move slowly through early Saturday".

Life-threatening storm surges of up to 13 feet have been forecast in some areas when the monster storm eventually makes landfall in North and SC.

Boarding up his home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Chris Pennington monitored the forecasts and tried to decide when to leave.

Even with some weakening that is predicted just before it makes landfall, the storm "is expected to remain a unsafe major hurricane as it approaches the coastline", the hurricane center said.

About 800 flights in the region have been canceled ahead of the storm, CNN reported.

About 10 million people live in the path of the slow-moving storm and more than 1 million had been ordered to evacuate the coasts of the Carolinas and Virginia, jamming westbound roads and highways for miles.

The Saffir-Simpson scale that meteorologists use to measure hurricanes reflects only the wind speeds involved in the storm, and right now Hurricane Florence's winds are hovering at maximum speeds of about 110 miles per hour (175 km/h).

Hurricane Florence in the Atlantic Ocean as it threatens the US East Coast.

At least 88,000 people were without power in North Carolina with the brunt of the storm yet to come, according to the state's emergency management agency. President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency on the federal level Tuesday for the Carolinas and Virginia.

There will be hurricane-force winds up to 80 miles from the centre of the storm, meteorologists say. "It's something we haven't seen. ever".

Hurricane Florence is continuing to push towards a landfall around the North Carolina/South Carolina border, and is beginning to lash the central Atlantic seaboard with damaging winds and storm surge. Rather than pushing up toward western Virginia, the storm's center is now predicted to move across eastern SC on Friday night and Saturday.

Tropical Storm Isaac moved between the islands of Martinique and Dominica this morning, where warnings were issued to the population. Storm surge warnings indicate a danger of life-threatening inundation from rising water moving inland from the coastline during the coming 36 hours.

But the Miami-based NHC stressed it remained "a life-threatening situation" due to the risks of storm surge around coastal areas.

Storm surge is deadly. It's not clear yet where the storm will park, but local forecasts have predicted some areas could receive 30-40 inches of rain depending on where the storm sits. Tropical Storm Olivia made a double landfall in Hawaii Wednesday morning, first in west Maui then Lanai, KHNL reports. "Significant river flooding is expected as a result of excessive rainfall across area hydrologic basins". Hurricane's typically lose power relatively quickly once they make landfall, but a stalled-out hurricane can recharge itself from warmer coastal waters while simultaneously dumping huge amounts of water on the already-inundated southeast. Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands face possible isolated amounts of 3 inches. (At the time it became the second costliest USA hurricane, but has since been supplanted by Harvey and Maria, both in 2017). Brian Wierzbicki, with U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va.
