Two men named as suspects in the poisoning of a Russian ex-spy in the United Kingdom claim they were merely tourists.
"Our friends had been suggesting for a long time that we visit this wonderful town", one of the men said.
"The duo surfaced a day after President Putin said Russian Federation had located Petrov and Boshirov, but that there was nothing special or criminal about them". They'd been "extremely nervous and sweating" during the interview and it's for viewers to decide whether to believe them, she said.
Theresa May, however, said the men were agents of Russia's foreign military intelligence agency, the GRU, and their actions were "almost certainly also approved outside the GRU at a senior level of the Russian state".
The accusation that they are part of the GRU, the Russian military intelligence service, was "the scariest thing" about the incident, Petrov said, according to the translation by RT.
The Skripal case has been likened by British politicians to the murder of Russian dissident ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko, who was poisoned with a rare radioactive isotope in a London hotel in 2006. They admitted to visiting Salisbury twice, once on March 3 and again on the fourth.
In the RT interview, the two men said they're not Russian agents, describing themselves as "second-tier businessmen" in the fitness industry.
The Kremlin-backed station aired the interview a day after President Vladimir Putin said Russian Federation had identified the men sought by Britain and urged them to address the media. Boshirov said. He went on to claim that if they had such an item in their luggage, it would have been hard to get past airport customs agents without arousing suspicion. Much of Britain suffered such weather that day.
So what were these two men really doing in Salisbury? They departed hours after the Skripals were found slumped over on a bench.
They again were recorded in the center of town an hour later and were at the station by 1:50 p.m., two hours after arriving.
The Member of Parliament for Salisbury, John Glen, said the interview made by the suspects to RT is "not credible" and "does not match intelligence we have on the individuals", Sky News reported.
"From Heathrow Airport, they returned to Moscow on Aeroflot flight SU2585, departing at 10.30pm on Sunday, 4 March".
They said they may have approached Skripal's house by chance but did not know where it was located. Prosecutors say the Skripals came into contact with Novichok, a military-grade nerve agent. While they acknowledged being the pair seen in images released by Scotland Yard, the men did not provide proof of their names.
Boshirov: "You know, let's not breach anyone's privacy".
"Of course, we went to Salisbury to see Stonehenge, Old Sarum, but we couldn't do it because there was muddy slush everywhere".
RT's editor-in-chief said the two men reached out to her as they wanted to tell their story because they are now living in fear for their lives. This whole situation is an incredible coincidence, and we just want to be left in peace. "What is our fault?"
"When your life is turned upside down in a moment?" "But very unusual to come all this way for just two days while carrying Novichok in their luggage", Tweeted John Glen, the Member of Parliament for Salisbury.
