The United States Embassy in Ankara has been attacked by unidentified assailants who fired several gunshots from a vehicle early on Aug 20, hitting a window in a security cabin but causing no casualties.

The attack on the embassy in the Turkish capital was a clear attempt to "create chaos", the spokesman for President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday, condemning the early morning drive-by attack.

Police said no one was hurt in the incident and the embassy was due to be closed for the Muslim Eid al-Adha celebration.

The private Ihlas news agency said four to five rounds were fired from a moving white auto and targeted the security booth outside Gate 6.

The US embassy spokesman David Gainer confirmed to Agence France-Presse that a "security incident" had taken place.

USA administration had imposed sanctions and vows to do more against Turkey in the case the pastor would not be released immediately. It said one bullet hit a window but no one was hurt, and police were searching for the auto and suspects.

President Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman condemned the attack as an attempt "to create chaos" and the Turkish Foreign Ministry said it had increased security measures for the embassy and other US missions and employees in Turkey.

Video footage from broadcaster Haberturk showed police inspecting one of the entrances to the building and what looked like damage inflicted on a window by a gunshot could be seen. It said empty cartridges were found at the scene.

The statement said the investigation was ongoing and the suspect or suspects have not yet been identified.

Ibarahim Kalin added: "Turkey is a safe country and all foreign missions are under the guarantee of the laws".

The US embassy in Ankara and the consulate in Istanbul have been the targets of attacks by militants, besides receiving threats in the past.
