The president on Wednesday cited Brennan's "wild outbursts on the internet and television - about this administration".

Rand Paul, when he revoked the security clearance of former CIA Director John Brennan.

The moment marked the culmination of an escalating feud between Trump, who has demonstrated a penchant for lashing out at criticism, and Brennan, a career intelligence official who has served four presidents over a career spanning 30 years.

National security lawyer Brad Moss said it is not certain that Trump can legally rescind clearances on the grounds stated by the White House. "Mr. Brennan's lying and recent conduct, characterized by increasingly frenzied commentary, is wholly inconsistent with access to the Nation's most closely held secrets and facilitates the very aim of our adversaries, which is to sow division and chaos".

Brennan snapped back at Trump in a tweet, saying the White House's decision was part of a broader attack against the freedom of American citizens. Then, as now, the White House offered a series of motivations for the crackdown on a person who was a liability in the Russian Federation probe.

True to form, Brennan himself responded to Trump in a verbose tweet, stating that "my principles are worth far more than clearances", and vowing to keep up the #resistance.

Trump revoked former CIA Director John Brennan's security clearance Wednesday. Jaw-dropper for anyone out of the loop: Brennan voted for the Communist Party candidate for president in 1976. Last month, Brennan described Trump's summit with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, in Helsinki as "nothing short of treasonous" after Trump sided with the Kremlin over USA intelligence officials when asked if Moscow had interfered in the 2016 presidential election. Mr Brennan headed the CIA, the foreign intelligence service, when the alleged hacking took place and stepped down after Mr Trump won the election.
