In about 12 hours Wednesday, more than 30 people - most of whom had been on the New Haven green - were treated for overdoses of a drug known as "K2" laced a with a synthetic opioid, police said. Another five people refused medical treatment.

The man arrested on Wednesday is suspected of being connected to some of the drugs that caused the overdoses, NBC News Connecticut reported.

Paramedics were stationed at the New Haven Green in CT, which borders part of Yale University.

Officials said the blood of Wednesday's victims was being tested to see what exactly they ingested.

Two of the ODs were life-threatening, and some people did not respond when the anti-overdose medication Naloxone was administered, he said. Sandy Bogucki told reporters.

Fontana said the patients had symptoms of increased heart rates, decreased respiratory rates and a lot of vomiting.

Nationally, overdose deaths reached a record level of 72,000 in 2017, according to a recent federal report. "The identity of the man arrested will not be released until such time he's been positively identified by any probable victim so as not to taint the investigation". Chief Mark Vendetto, New Haven Fire Department. An additional three people overdosed at the park Tuesday night (Aug. 14).

"People are self-medicating for several different reasons and every agency - police, fire, medical, hospitals - all are strained at this time", Chief Alston said.

The alert also reminds people of the symptoms of overdoses: The person won't wake up; has blue lips or fingernails; has clammy, cool skin; shallow, slow breathing or is suffering from seizures, the EMS office said. First responders sprinted across the park from victim to victim as more calls came in.

"The substance behind these overdoses is highly risky and must be avoided", Malloy said, adding that state public health officials had delivered 50 doses of Naloxone to New Haven to replenish the supply expended by first responders over the course of the 24-hour crisis.

The overdoses follow a similar outbreak at the same park on July 4, when more than a dozen people were treated.

In two cases, Narcan was not effective in the field, but a high dose of Narcan at the hospital was effective in combating the overdose effects.
