Police believe the 29-year-old suspect deliberately drove a auto into pedestrians and cyclists injuring three people, before ramming a security barrier outside Parliament during the rush hour on Tuesday morning.

The area is in lockdown after armed police swarmed the scene on Tuesday morning (local time).

Earlier today, a auto crashed into the security barriers outside the Houses of Parliament in London.

Eyewitness Ewalina Ochab told the BBC: "I think it looked intentional - the auto drove at speed and towards the barriers".

Barry Williams, a BBC member of staff based at Millbank, said: "I heard lots of screams and turned round". One eyewitness, who declined to give his name, said he saw a small hatchback drive into a group of cyclists and then into the barrier outside the Palace of Westminster.

Armed police swooped into the area after the incident was reported at 7:37 a.m., arresting the vehicle driver and cordoning off streets surrounding the heart of Britain's government.

The suspect who drove into barriers outside parliament in an attempted terror attack has been named as Salih Khater, according to Sky sources.

"At this early stage of the investigation, no other suspects at the scene have been identified or reported to police".

"A number of pedestrians" are understood to have been injured after a silver vehicle collided with the large black barrier at the side of the road.

"I think they're doing everything they can to find out more about the incident and we must keep an open mind about what actually happened", Mr Javid said.

"I wasn't sure whether he meant to hit the cyclists, they might have just been in the way, but once he did, he accelerated towards the barrier".

Another witness, Jason Williams, also said the vehicle was moving fast.

"I saw someone was arrested, but I couldn't see him closely".

The Met have revealed extra officers - both armed and unarmed - have been deployed on the streets in and around central London.

In June 2017, eight people were killed and 48 injured when three terrorists drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before leaving the van and stabbing dozens of people in nearby bars at Borough Market. He was shot dead at the scene.

It was the first of five attacks in Britain past year that police designated as terrorism.
