He said no residences were involved.

There have since been reports of fatalities, as well as claims that one person has been pulled alive from the rubble.

The bridge is part of a motorway and is about 100 metres tall. There had been much discussion about the bridge's future in recent decades.

A section of the bridge crashed down from a height of about 50 meters over a river and some railroad tracks and buildings. That included the trash management offices for the city of Genoa.

Genoa is located between the sea and the mountains of north-west Italy. Italy's Interior Ministry says 11 died in the accident, according to ANSA.

Antonio Tajani, president of the European Parliament, expressed his thoughts for the victims on Twitter.

"These tragedies can not happen in a civilised country like Italy".

The disaster occurred on a major highway that connects Italy to France and other vacation resorts.

Around 200 firefighters were sent to the scene.Italian news agency Adnkronos quoted the head of the local ambulance service as saying "dozens" of people had been killed.

"Unfortunately, we have around 30 established deaths and some injured people in a serious condition", Salvini said to Ansa. At least 10 people were killed and 20 vehicles were involved, local police sources had said. In addition, heavy equipment was being moved in so they could lift pieces of the bridge.

The collapsed bridge was built on the A10 toll motorway in the 1960s. Media reports had earlier put it at 200 meters. A bridge crane had been installed to allow those works to be carried out, the operator said in a statement.

A rescue mission was underway, though Italian officials didn't immediately confirm any casualties.

Matteo Salvini, Italy's interior minister, thanked the rescuers for their efforts.

The Morandi Bridge is a main thoroughfare connecting the A10 highway that goes toward France and the A7 highway that continues north toward Milan.

A witness told ANSA that lightning struck the bridge before the collapse.

Police said that a violent storm was the cause of the collapse.

A man could be heard crying out for God on video at the scene, watching as the bridge collapsed.
