Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says mismanagement hurts economy more than USA sanctions

Ellis Copeland | 13 August, 2018, 20:56

Trump has been a frequent critic of the Iran nuclear deal and put the sanctions back in place after pulling the United States from the agreement. Iran has denounced the sanctions as "US unilateralism".

Ayatollah Khamenei's tweets followed a speech in Tehran, in which he described Mr. Trump's offer of talks as "a unsafe game" and his administration as a "bullying, fraudulent regime". Khamenei also took the opportunity during his Monday diatribe to take a jab at Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and the country's faltering economy.

That mirrored criticism of Rouhani s economic management from senior members of the clergy and the Revolutionary Guards.

The Associated Press, meanwhile, reported that Khamenei said that negotiation "with the bullying and very eager government of the US means giving it an instrument through which it can add to its hostility".

"Negotiations with the USA would definitely harm us and they are forbidden", Khamenei said, adding that the Americans had proven they could not be trusted.

"Not that sanctions don t have an impact, but the main factor is how we handle them", he added.

"They (the Americans) are exaggerating the possibility of a war with Iran". "I do not call it betrayal but a huge mistake in management".

Iranian officials have blamed "enemies" for the fall of the currency and a rapid rise in the price of gold coins, and more than 60 people, including several officials, have been arrested on charges that carry the death penalty.

Fearing further economic hardship, thousands of Iranians in recent weeks have protested against the slump in the rial, sharp rises in the prices of some food items and state corruption. Defence Minister Gen. Amir Hatami told state TV the surface-to-surface missile, dubbed Fateh-e Mobin, or Bright Conqueror, was effective in all weather conditions. He said the deal was not working and also has said Iran must stop meddling in conflicts in Syria and Yemen.
