The public prosecutor for the region confirmed to AFP that the president and vice-president of the association that brought the children from Leverkusen to the village of Saint-Julien-de-Peyrolas were being held on suspicion of causing unintentional injury and endangering the lives of others.

A senior Gard official, Thierry Dousset, told the rolling news channel BFMTV that hundreds of people had been evacuated from five campsites.

Kathryn Alford, 44, from Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, was at Huttopia Camping Le Moulin in Saint Martin d'Ardeche with her husband and two children.

Rescue workers continued Friday to search for the missing man, who has not yet been identified.

The vehicle was found "empty and in pieces" near the river after the man was trapped by a muddy, fast-flowing torrent when the Ardeche river burst its banks.

About 400 firefighters and policemen, backed by four helicopters, helped in the evacuations and performed rescue operations, the French interior minister said.

About 17,000 homes in southwest and northeast France were without power and several roads were closed as a result of the floods.

UK Met Office weather expert Marco Petagna said almost three inches of rain fell in the area in just 24 hours.
