Yemeni tribal leaders told the AP the Saudi-led US -backed coalition fighting Shiite Houthi rebels was behind the airstrike.

That was the toll at just one hospital.

"The victims were the children in the bus, passersby and merchants in the market, and some injuries are serious, so the number of deaths may increase".

The coalition, which also includes the United Arab Emirates, intervened in 2015 to try to restore the internationally recognised government after the rebels drove it out of the capital Sanaa.

‏He added: "Launching ballistic missiles at densely-populated civilian areas is a direct breach of the principles of worldwide humanitarian law".

Citing "local officials", the head of the worldwide aid group's delegation in Yemen says that in total at least 50 people died and dozens more were injured.

The UN children's agency UNICEF said it was "very concerned with the initial reports of children being killed".

It was unclear how many children were killed and how many air strikes were carried out in the area, in northern Yemen, near the border with Saudi Arabia.

Saudi-led coalition air strikes on bus carrying children in Yemen leaves 'dozens' dead

"There is still some support" from Iran for the anti-government Houthi rebels, Abd-Rabbo Moftah, deputy governor of the Yemen city of Ma'rib told Fox News.

The United States and other Western powers provide arms and intelligence to the alliance, and human rights groups have criticised them over coalition air strikes that have killed hundreds of civilians at hospitals, schools and markets.

"The place is known to be a market, [and] there is no military installation nearby. but the Saudis are known to have done this many times-target schools, weddings and so on", Nasser Arrabyee told Al Jazeera. Turki al-Malki said the attack was "a legitimate military action, conducted in conformity with global humanitarian law". A Saudi Arabian blockade has contributed to starvation and disease while a United Nations report found the Saudi-led bombing campaign - carried out with USA support - has hit schools, even weddings.

Asked about the airstrike by the USA -backed coalition, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters "we are certainly concerned".

US bombs. USA targeting.

Worldwide rights groups repeated calls for an end to the war and strongly condemned the bus attack and other civilian massacres.

"We see violations across the country and it's really sad to speak about civilian casualties in a matter of less than a week".

In May, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on five Iranians linked with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) who allegedly provided ballistic missile support to the Houthi rebels in Yemen which they then used to attack Saudi Arabia.
