Elliott claims first career Cup win, holds off Truex at Watkins Glen

Elliott led the final 32 laps of the race, holding off a hard-charging Martin Truex Jr, who ultimately ran out of gas.

After eight runner-up finishes, Chase Elliott outdueled the defending champ this time en route to his first win, coming in his third full-time season and his 99th start in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. This time, Elliott, who had several brushes with Hamlin in the first stage, quickly got past Hamlin and began putting pressure on Busch.

Elliott won the race's second stage and brought the crowd to its feet with a pass of Busch.

Elliott held off defending race victor, Martin Truex, Jr., in the closing laps.

Rookie Christopher Bell, who leads the points standings and was chasing a record-tying fourth consecutive win, finished ninth in a race on a track he had never raced on.

Finishing third was Kyle Busch of Joe Gibbs Racing. Elliott pulled out to a half-second lead while Truex was fighting to get back to the front after restarting 12th.

Racing announced Saturday afternoon that the NASCAR Hall of Famer would race in the August 26 Xfinity Series race at Road America.

The most recent NASCAR Xfinity Series race in which the and two-time Daytona 500 champion has driven is the 2005 Sam's Town 250 at Memphis Motorsports Park.
