The foreign ministry said that Seagal will not be paid for his work.

Russia has appointed Hollywood Actor Steven Seagal as special representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to focus on humanitarian issues with the United States (U.S.).

The 66-year-old has called President Putin "one of the great living world leaders", and when Seagal was granted Russian citizenship, said he hoped it would be a symbol of how relations between Moscow and Washington were starting to improve.

According to the ministry, the position was created to deepen humanitarian ties, as well as cultural, art and youth ties between the two countries.

Seagal, an outspoken supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been a Russian citizen since 2016. He signed his Russian passport in Putin's presence in a ceremony in 2016.

Relations between Russian Federation and the U.S. have soured over allegations that Moscow interfered in the 2016 USA presidential race, which Russian Federation repeatedly denies.

Was Steven Seagal's "bromance" with Russia's Putin behind Ukraine's blacklist?

He will receive no salary, the Ministry said, adding, "It's a case of people's diplomacy intersecting with traditional diplomacy".

The unpaid position will be similar to a United Nations goodwill ambassador's role, the foreign ministry said.

Seagal was cited by Kremlin-backed TV station RT as welcoming the appointment.

For more than a decade Seagal, who according to his own website is 66, has been a regular visitor to Russian Federation. His movies, including such titles as "Under Siege" and "Sniper: Special Ops", are popular with Russian audiences.

The 66-year-old actor was born in Lansing, the capital city of U.S. state of MI.
