Facebook dating service begins testing internally

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan Facebook has begun internally testing its dating feature
Troy Mann | 06 August, 2018, 09:22

While it has not been possible to test out the feature - it's only available to Facebook employees at the moment - the leak shows that Facebook Dating lets people specify the type of person they are looking to meet, and also suggests "conversation starters" to help get over nervous hurdles.

Facebook had announced the dating product - which will not be a standalone dating app - during its F8 developer conference in the U.S. in May.

"Dogfooding this product is completely voluntary and has no impact on your employment", the screenshot reads further.

Facebook recently shut down "Lifestage", its standalone social networking app that it released a year ago for high schoolers.

Dating apps like Bumble already ask users to sign in using their Facebook accounts in a bid to spot mutual friends - and avoid making embarrassing connections with family members or close friends. We will purge the dummy data prior to public launch.

Right now, some of Facebook's staff in the USA are putting the app through its paces, though it's mainly to spot bugs and problems rather than set up any office romances, Facebook says.

"We have designed this with privacy and safety in mind from the beginning". Two months after announcing the product, Facebook has now finally begun testing its dating project internally with employees. Once you enable the Dating feature, it will not show up in your News Feed for everyone to see, you'll simply start seeing others using it.

The format of the dating feature appears to be similar to other apps like Tinder, although it isn't clear whether it will include a swipe interaction to indicate whether users like each others' profiles.
