Ryanair proposes mediator for Irish pilots union talks

"Ryanair believes that this is because FORSA are not in control of the process, it is being driven by a tiny handful of Aer Lingus pilots who are now working with other pilot unions across Europe to co-ordinate a day of disruption on Friday 10 Aug next".

Kenny Jacobs, chief marketing officer at Ryanair, commented: "Regrettably, nearly 200,000 Ryanair customers had their flights cancelled in July because of repeated ATC staff shortages in the UK, Germany and France, adverse weather, and unnecessary pilot and cabin crew strikes".

"Ever since Ryanair in December 2017 announced that it will be recognising unions for pilots all over Europe, the developments have been similar everywhere".

Ryanair pilots from Belgium and Sweden have already announced a strike on the same date.

Forsa said in a statement: "Ryanair's announcement that it will accept independent third-party assistance in its dispute with pilots, which was made without preconditions, is an unexpected and positive development".

So far that has forced Ryanair to cancel 6% of the more than 2,400 flights it has scheduled across Europe next Friday - a further 20 to and from Ireland, 22 in and out of Sweden and 104 in Belgium.

A banner set up by some of Ryanair's Ireland-based pilots on strike is seen at Ryanair headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, Aug. 3, 2018.

Airline chiefs claim all passengers left stranded by the cancellations were notified last week by email or text message.

This is the fifth strike by pilots since July 12.

In a statement, the SEPLA pilots' union said it filed the lawsuit at Spain's top-level National Court after a year of negotiations with Ryanair to employ its members under Spanish rather than Irish legislation failed to bear fruit.

Ryanair has said it will shift jobs and planes to more profitable areas, and threatened to move more if the strikes continue.

"Ryanair again calls on FORSA to remove these Aer Lingus pilots from the process since they have no interest in meeting or resolving this dispute, they just want to damage Ryanair's business and our share price for the benefit of Aer Lingus".

Founded 33 years ago in Dublin, the airline boasts lower costs per passenger than its competitors. Sepla represents around 500 of the 800 Ryanair pilots in Spain.

Ryanair refused to say anything on the lawsuit, saying it did not "comment on rumor or speculation".
