Turkey will retaliate against a USA decision to impose sanctions on two senior ministers over the imprisonment of Pastor AndrewBrunson, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.
"Pastor Brunson's unjust detention and continued prosecution by Turkish officials is simply unacceptable", Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.
Mr. Brunson had been jailed for about 18 months on terrorism-related charges.
Speaking privately to journalists late Saturday, President Erdogan broke his silence on the crisis, saying the US can't use sanctions to make Turkey back down.
Ankara, however, transferred Brunson to house arrest last week instead of repatriating him to the United States, provoking Trump's fury.
On Tuesday, Turkish government spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said Ankara would retaliate against any US sanctions and hoped the conflict could be resolved during a meeting between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Cavusoglu later this week.
Brunson denies the charges while USA officials have repeatedly stressed that Brunson is innocent.
Brunson's detention has deepened a rift between Washington and Ankara, which are also at odds over the Syrian war, Turkey's plan to buy a missile defense system from Russian Federation, and planned US sanctions on Iran - which supplies fuel to Turkey.
The Washington Post reported on Thursday that Trump asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a 14 July phone call to let Ozkan go in a "trade" for Brunson, who has spent 21 months in Turkish detention.
