The Big Mac of food currencies

Grand Big Mac Grand Big Mac

The coin will earn customers a second Big Mac.

Suggesting the global appeal of the iconic burger, there are seven languages featured across the various designs: Arabic, English, Indonesian, Mandarin, Portuguese, French and Spanish.

So starting on August 2nd, in tribute to The Economist's take on this particular form of monetary power, McDonald's will be giving out a MacCoin with every Big Mac purchase.

The idea of MacCoins is that customers can share, collect and redeem them for a free Big Mac at McDonald's restaurants in more than 50 countries, meaning travellers won't need to change currency in order to buy a Big Mac.

This year the Big Mac is turning 50, which is quite the achievement for any burger from a fast food restaurant, and McDonald's is making it easier and cheaper for you to get your hands on one with the MacCoin.

"They use it to this day", Easterbrook told USA Today of the Big Mac Index and how it sparked the idea to create the MacCoin.

"Global connectivity of the Big Mac inspired the creation of the MacCoin".

The fast food giant plans to distribute more than 6.2 million MacCoins while supplies last. Locations of the guards will be available on the McDonald's NZ Facebook page.

The Big Mac, since it arrived fifty years ago, has become ubiquitous as a mainstay of speedy, beefy goodness.

After similar results at more stores, the Big Mac was added to the national menu in 1968. It didn't work. Delligatti tried a bigger sesame seed bun, and the burger soon lifted sales by more than 12 percent.

"The company has benefited from the ingenuity of its small business men", wrote Ray Kroc, who transformed the McDonald's into a global franchise, in his book, "Grinding It Out".

But we kind of wish the Golden Arches would let this economic experiment play out by removing the time limit.

Messing with a signature menu item can be taboo, but keeping the Big Mac unchanged comes with its own risks.
