There is now a multistate outbreak of salmonella infections linked to people touching backyard poultry, the CDC said on Monday. The illnesses reportedly started on February 15, 2018.

No deaths have been reported in the recent outbreak of salmonella, which has been going on for several months.

CDC officials have linked these outbreaks to contact with live poultry, such as chicks or ducklings. They told interviewers they obtained the chicks and ducklings from feed supply stores, websites, hatcheries and from relatives.

"A lot of people perceive a bird with salmonella will look sick, but that is really not the case", explained CDC veterinarian Dr. Megin Nichols after an outbreak previous year.

"Children younger than 5 years of age are more likely to get sick from exposure to germs like salmonella".

Most persons infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection.

The investigation showed that several strains of the Salmonella bacteria are involved in the outbreaks: Salmonella Seftenberg, Salmonella Montevideo, Salmonella Infantis, Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Indiana, and Salmonella Litchfield. The birds can carry the bacteria either on their feathers, on their feet and in their droppings.

The CDC suggested tips for handling live poultry: Always wash your hands with soap and water after touching live poultry or their environment.

The FDA commissioner stated that the U.S. Department of Agriculture is working with Pinnacle Foods Inc. on a health alert for Hungry Man products that may also contain whey powder tainted with salmonella. The recalls were precautionary; at the time of the recalls no cases of Salmonella related to the snack products had been reported.

Do not let live poultry in the house or where you keep food and drinks, the CDC said.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick.
