Pompeo: Talks with North Korea on returning war dead ‘productive and cooperative’

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks to members of the media following two days of meetings with Kim Yong Chol a North Korean senior ruling party official and former intelligence chief before boarding his plane at Sunan International Airport in Py Trump Releases ‘Very Nice’ Letter From Kim Jong Un

He said that the discussions were "productive and cooperative and resulted in firm commitments" from North Korean officials on the return of the remains.

After entering disarmament talks with the United States earlier this year, Kim met in June with President Donald Trump and agreed to commit to 'complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula'.

The messaging was somewhat of a theme over the weekend with two other North Korean outlets - DPRK Today and Uriminzokkiri - filing similar reports criticizing USA media for raising doubts about the North's intention to fulfill its commitment for denuclearization.

Questions have also been raised by Tomas Ojea Quintana, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in North Korea, who told a press conference in Seoul last week there needs to be a thorough and independent investigation into the case.

The North is believed to have about 200 sets of remains ready to be transferred, and U.S. Forces Korea has moved 100 caskets to the border area in anticipation that they will be turned over.

The meeting arranged by the U.S. State Department was originally scheduled to take place last Thursday, but the North Koreans were no-shows.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency, citing South Korean government and USA military sources, said the negotiations had begun at 0100 GMT at the border village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said that amnesty will be granted to those who were convicted of crimes against the country and people on the occasion of the North's 70th founding anniversary.

At the Singapore summit, Kim Jong Un made a broad commitment to "work toward denuclearization", but fell short of details on how or when he would dismantle North Korea's nuclear program, which it has pursued in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

USA and South Korean officials say they are ready to help North Korea revive its economy if it gives up its nuclear programme.

But Trump has continued to insist that his administration is making progress with regards to North Korea.

The White House has hailed the summit between Kim and Trump in Singapore as a major breakthrough toward disarming the isolated, nuclear-armed North in exchange for easing of sanctions and other help with economic development.

"I mean, I could name plenty of others that we deal with that you don't say the same thing about".

President Donald Trump took to Twitter again Sunday to lament coverage of his administration and its fight against "fake news", calling much of the USA news media "indeed the enemy of the people".

Calling Trump "Your Excellency" five times, Kim said in the letter Trump's "invariable trust and confidence" would be "further strengthened in the future process of taking practical actions".
