"It was a very hard decision for me to cut my nails but when I realized that, after cutting them, they'll be at Ripley's Believe It or Not! and the museum is going to maintain them very nicely and for a lifetime, then I felt that I was making the right decision and that is why I chose to cut my nails", Chillal told reporters at the museum, which now has 66 years' worth of uncut nails on display.

The clipped nails will now be on display at the Ripley's Believe it or Not! museum. He was flown from Pune to NY for this ceremony by Ripley's Believe It or Not museum - where his nails will be immortalized. When asked by Guinness World Records in 2015 how his nails affected his life, he said they were extremely fragile and he needed to take special care while he was sleeping.

Chillal said he chose to grow his nails out after a teacher yelled at him for breaking one of her own long nails.

Shridhar Chillal of Pune, India had been growing his nails since 1952.

Ripley's reported that Chillal's nails had grown to exceed 350 inches and showed photos of them both curled and stretched out over a table.

Shridhar Chillal traveled from his home in India to New York City this week for the occasion.

He told the Guinness World Records that his left hand is permanently handicapped and he can't open his hand or flex his fingers. However, as he aged, his long nails were proving more challenging to maintain an ordinary lifestyle.

In a post on Instagram, the Guinness World Records described the occasion as "the end of an era".
