Last Alaska Blockbusters set to close, leaving 1 store in US

Both stores will close their doors on Monday with plans to reopen for an inventory sale starting at noon Tuesday that will run through July and August, according to a statement on the Blockbuster official Facebook page.

Two Alaska-based Blockbuster stores are closing next week, as reported by Gizmodo, leaving the OR location the sole remaining outlet.

This leaves a solitary Blockbuster location in Bend, Oregon to wave that yellow and blue banner for as long as it can.

It's the end of an era as two more Blockbuster locations are set to close, leaving only one lonely location in the US. Much of Alaska has unreliable internet, with HighSpeedInternet.com ranking it third-to-last in terms of internet connectivity in the U.S. The streaming video market has therefore been less successful, allowing stores like Blockbuster to continue to thrive.

The store also posted a video of two people carrying a candle and setting it in front of the store.

"It's pretty exciting that we are the last holdout", she said.

Daymude said the loss of such a loyal customer base will be a hard element in addition to the closing. "But it's been going on for so long that the shock has worn off, frankly", said Payne, who is based in Austin.

Blockbuster Alaska District Manager Kelli Vey and General Manager Kevin Daymude took to Facebook to issue the following message regarding the Alaskan closures.

In May, John Oliver and HBO even donated a weird assortment of Russell Crowe paraphernalia to one of the Anchorage stores that announced plans to close on Thursday. "If you'd asked me 14 years ago, there's no way I'd thought we'd be the last one". By this year, only a pair in Alaska and the final OR store had endured. We hope to see you at our stores during the closing, even if it's just to say 'Hello.' What a great time to build your media library and share some Blockbuster memories with us.

The days of aimlessly walking the aisles of your local Blockbuster every Friday night have been over for years in most parts of the United States.
