Coronado's friend, Cindy Barrientos, told police this was not the case, but rather her friend was simply asking Crenshaw for directions when the street artist jumped up and allegedly stabbed him, the Herald adds.

A homeless man in Miami known for painting with his feet stabbed a tourist with scissors on Tuesday, police said.

A man previously thought to be harmless - as he was a disabled artist who sold his canvases in Miami's touristy South Beach, has been charged with stabbing a Chicago tourist. Crenshaw then got up and used the scissors in self defense and quickly walked off, police said.

Crenshaw claimed he acted in self-defence after Coronado punched him in the head, the report said. He doesn't have any arms - it's not clear why - and he's been seen painting pictures with his feet, the Miami Herald reported.

The victim, Cesar Coronado, was admitted to a local hospital bleeding from his left arm, police said.

According to the arrest report, an officer showed up at the scene with the witness, who identified Crenshaw as the man who attacked her friend.

Police found Crenshaw nearby after he was described to officers as a homeless man without arms.

Crenshaw has a court date on July 18; his bond has been set at $7,500.

No one knows exactly when Crenshaw came to Miami Beach, according to the Miami New Times, but he has a lengthy arrest record going back to 2008, including trespassing, disorderly intoxication and a lot of battering police charges.
