The Centers for Disease Control is warning customers not to eat Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal after the breakfast was linked to 100 salmonella infections nationwide.

Regardless of the expiration date, the CDC says you should throw away the cereal or return it to a retailer for a refund.

The agency is urging consumers to avoid Honey Smacks, a sugary puffed wheat cereal which has been the subject of a recall by the company since mid-June.

Illnesses were first reported on March 3, and the most recent case was found on July 2. Thirty people have been hospitalized in this outbreak. No deaths have been reported, the CDC said. Tests also confirmed the strain in samples of leftover Honey Smacks cereal from the homes of sickened people in Montana, New York, and Utah.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration said on Thursday recalled Kellogg Co Honey Smacks cereal was still being sold at retail outlets and warned consumers not to purchase the product. About 450 people die in the United States each year from salmonella. The two states added to the outbreak are Florida and Colorado.

People infected with Salmonella may have symptoms including diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.

Though Kellogg recalled all Honey Smacks from shelves in June when they were linked to a salmonella outbreak, the FDA said Thursday that it has received reports of some stores still selling the cereal.

But efforts to recall the product were not successful.
